Helloween is a German power/speed metal band founded in the early 1980s by members of Iron Fist and Powerfool. Helloween are mostly known as one the pioneering power metal bands.

Sonata Arctica (Power Metal) – Discography

Bio:

Sotto il nome di Tricky Beans (primo nome del gruppo, cambiato poi in Tricky Means), il gruppo rilascia tre demo: “Friend Till The End” e “Agre Pamppers” nel 1996 e “Peace Maker” nel 1997. Nel 1999 dopo un profondo studio e alcuni cambi nella formazione esce la loro quarta demo Full Moon. Il successo di questa demo li portò alla più famosa casa discografica metal finlandese (Spinefarm) dove cambiarono nuovamente il loro nome in Sonata Arctica. Il primo album, Ecliptica, uscì nell’autunno dello stesso anno, dopo il singolo UnOpened, ed ebbe notevole successo. Il line-up comprendeva Tony Kakko (tastiera e voce), Jani Liimatainen (chitarra), Tommy Portimo (batteria) e Janne Kivilahti (basso).

Dopo questa prima esperienza, il cantante Tony, anche autore di tutte le canzoni, lasciò il posto di tastierista a Mikko Härkin, e la band fu scelta dagli Stratovarius come supporto per il loro tour assieme ai Rhapsody. Sulla cresta dell’onda, i Sonata Arctica rilasciarono un mini-cd, Successor, con canzoni live dal tour ed alcune cover.

Nel 2000, il bassista Janne lasciò il gruppo per motivi personali, ed a loro si unì l’amico Marko Paasikoski. Nello stesso anno la band partecipò a numerosi concerti con grandi gruppi come Alice Cooper e Dio, e fu candidata come “best new-comer band” dall’associazione delle case discografiche finlandesi.

Il secondo album, Silence, uscì nel 2001 a seguito del singolo Wolf & Raven del quale registrarono anche il video-clip. In quell’anno i Sonata Arctica suonarono molto in tour, specialmente in Giappone, dove Ecliptica aveva venduto 30.000 copie. Come conclusione, rilasciarono un altro singolo di successo dall’album Silence: Last Drop Falls. Del tour giapponese fecero il terzo album Songs of Silence, completamente live.

All’inizio del 2002, il tastierista Mikko decise di lasciare la band, ed il suo posto fu preso da Henrik Klingenberg. Durante il periodo d’assenza del tastierista, la band rilasciò il terzo studio-album Winterheart’s Guild. Le parti per tastiera furono suonate da Jens Johansson degli Stratovarius. L’integrazione con il nuovo membro non presentò problemi, anzi migliorò le performance live del gruppo. Victoria’s Secret fu il primo singolo dal nuovo album, che si rivelò essere il migliore tra tutti quelli fatti sin a quel momento, superando in classifica le band più seguite.

Il 2003 vide l’uscita di un nuovo singolo, Broken (14.000 copie solo in Finlandia), e di un nuovo EP per il Giappone: Takatalvi, modellato sul precedente Successor.

Nel 2004 i Sonata Arctica fecero da spalla agli Iron Maiden per il loro tour giapponese, e furono tra i candidati dell’Emma Award nella categoria “miglior album hard rock/metal” assieme a Children of Bodom, HIM e Kotiteollisuus (vincitori del premio con l’album Helvetistä itään). Aspettato con ansia, il singolo Don’t say a word uscì in agosto in Finlandia, arrivando subito in testa alle classifiche. L’album Reckoning Night, uscito in ottobre, aprì la strada per il tour europeo Reckoning Night, fatto assieme ai Nightwish, che portò la band per la seconda volta in Italia (Milano). Dato il successo di quest’album, fu rilasciato un altro singolo, Shamandalie, che raggiunse il terzo posto in classifica in Finlandia.

Il 2005 si apre con la nuova candidatura all’Emma Gaala.

Nel 2006 esce il live “For the Sake of Revenge” con conseguente dvd.

Nel 2007 si preparano a far uscire, il 25 maggio, il nuovo album intitolato “Unia” (“Sogno” in finlandese). Il singolo tratto dall’album, “Paid in Full”, uscirà il 27.04. Sempre nello stesso anno Jani lascia temporaneamente la band per svolgere il servizio di leva obbligatoria, e viene rimpiazzato da Elias Viljanen.
